The Legacy BeginsThe story of Elysian Hills is closely connected to the life of Gertrude Coorey (1899–1967), a remarkable lady whose life spanned an era of great change in Nuwara Eliya. Born at the dawn of the twentieth century, she witnessed the golden age of Sri Lanka's hill country, when elegant colonial residences and tea planter bungalows shaped the character of the town.
1920
A Hill Country HomeDuring the early decades of the twentieth century, the bungalow that would eventually become Elysian Hills was established as a distinguished hill-country residence. Built in the architectural style of the period, it featured high ceilings, Coir floors, spacious verandahs, and beautifully landscaped gardens designed to embrace Nuwara Eliya's cool climate.

The Coorey YearsFor many years, the property served as a cherished family home associated with Gertrude Coorey and her family. Throughout this period, the bungalow became part of the social and cultural fabric of old Nuwara Eliya, standing as a quiet witness to the evolution of Sri Lanka's most celebrated hill station
1967
A Gift of Faith and ServiceFollowing the passing of Gertrude Coorey in 1967, the property entered a new chapter. In keeping with her values and legacy, the residence became associated with the Church of Chilaw, contributing to a period of stewardship dedicated to faith, community, and service

Restoration and RenewalRecognising the historical significance of the property, careful restoration and conservation works were undertaken to preserve its heritage features while enhancing comfort for modern travellers. Every effort was made to maintain the spirit and authenticity of the original bungalow.

Birth of Elysian Hills Heritage BungalowA new chapter began with the opening of Elysian Hills Heritage Bungalow. Thoughtfully restored and reimagined as a boutique heritage retreat, the property was opened to guests seeking an authentic experience of old Nuwara Eliya, colonial elegance, and warm Sri Lankan hospitality.
